The Gulf Coast Havanese club is a newly formed local Havanese club. That means we are governed by a steering committee and our charter officers. Our most immediate goals are to:
- formalize our bylaws and elect officers/directors in accordance with those bylaws
- notify our parent club (the Havanese Club of America) of our existence and request their official recognition
- begin procedures for AKC recognition, sanctioning and accreditation
- after receipt of AKC approval of name and territory, proceed to incorporate club and file for IRS status
- recruit members - primarily from within our target geographical area, but also from outside that area as associate members
- hold events that include fun matches, conformation events (initially under the umbrella of the HCA parent club), educational seminars and demos, meet the breed events, and social events
- pursue any other activity or project that promotes and protects the Havanese breed
The Gulf Coast Havanese Club supports existing Havanese clubs, but feels that a club best serves its members and the Havanese breed when face to face contact at many events throughout the year is possible. To promote this face to face interaction, we have carved out a portion of the Texas and Louisiana area on which to focus our events and meetings. The states of Texas and Louisiana simply present too large a geographic territory for members to get together on a regular basis. To drive from one end of that territory to the other would be almost 1000 miles, where our geographic terrirtory is much smaller. Specifically, our proposed territory includes the Bryan/College Station area south to Matagorda Island, east to the Pearl River, and north to Alexandria. Included in our local region are Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and the Houston metropolitan area. We are fortunate that the mid point in our territory, the towns of Beaumont, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana offer several AKC dog events in very nice facilities and will provide us with an ideal meeting place in the middle of our territory several times each year. The Beaumont/Lake Charles area is about a 90 minute to 2 hour drive for most of our members. We also plan to hold tandem social and educational activities in both Houston and Baton Rouge. Many of our members also hold memberships in other Havanese clubs, both regional and national. We intend to continue to lend our support to those clubs as well.
Our Steering Committee consists of:
Joel & Cherie Belcher, Dulce Borjas, Jim & Chris Disser, Netta DuPlanti, Debi Kaplan, John & Linda Lambert, Patrick & Dina Planche, Bob & Cora Rand, Dr. Luis & Carol Rodriguez, and Dr. Roland & Jan Wilken.
